The “Yeguada Cartuja Hierro del Bocado” is located in “Jerez de la Frontera”, close to the Monastery of “La Cartuja”, and has been dedicated to the breeding and preservation of Carthusian horses, flagship of the pure Spanish breed, for 540 years.
Founded in the late 15th century by the monks of the Carthusian order, they began breeding Cartujano horses in the pasture “Fuente del Suero”. Nowadays, the “Yeguada” is managed by the state-owned company “EXPASA”.
Our facilities, property of the Spanish state, are located at the Fuente del Suero estate. They include modern facilities such as a stallion yard, a historical harness room, a cart museum, a training room, an indoor arena, mare warehouse, among other facilities.
These days, the “Yeguada Cartuja” has around 300 Cartushian horses, which are trained to develop skills for future use, enhancing the energy, spectacularity, variety, and richness of the breed’s properties. Among the types of trainning we provide are classical and vaquera dressage, with particular attention to the cobra of mares, which recalls the role of mares in fieldwork.

Our mission is to keep and promote the “Yeguada Cartuja” as the world’s most important reserve of the Pure Spanish Horse, as well to preserve and contribute to the improvement of purebred horses in general, with special attention to the Carthusian horses.
We also aim to make this genetic heritage and knowledge available to society through visits and collaborations with public and private entities and institutions.
Our vision is to enhance the Carthusian horse as a symbol of Spain’s historical and cultural heritage and to make this legacy known to society both nationally and internationally, by providing a renewed and integrative vision to the diversification of rural economies.
